Got back Sunday from a whirlwind weekend in SD where I produced and performed in our second COMIC STRIP! – a comic-themed burlesque show for Comic Con Weekend. Still haven’t completely caught up on sleep, but wanted to share my latest pride and joy!

The economy is tough and everyone knows people that have been having a hard time making ends meet. 100% of the door money, tips for catering, raffle money, and donations will be donated to local SF Bay Area performers that are having just that same trouble. Almost all of the performers are donating their talents for this show. Last time we raised $600+ to benefit an injured performer. This time we are hoping to raise $1,500.

The first 100 guests will get a gift bag from Whole Foods who has also generously agreed to match a % of the funds raised in Whole Foods gift cards so come out and help us get every penny we can for out-of-work, recently-laid-off, under-employed actors/dancers/comedians/musicians/variety performers! Wooooh… It’s been a hell of a year already, and we’re not even halfway through. Lots of stuff happening and on deck:

• Full time day job. (YAY!)
• Teaching Burlesque Boot Camp classes every Saturday.
• Performing in and co-producing BREASTACULAR! BREASTACULAR! featuring Catherine D’Lish!!! (Benefit show for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.)
• Setting up a special Burlesque Striptease Workshop with Catherine D’Lish– an extraordinary treat for San Diego!
• Working on some merch to be launched at the benefit show.
• Outlining a couple of book projects.
• Planning my move back to the Bay Area.
• Designing a website for an amazing artist– to be announced soon.
• On that note, contemplating a redesign of my own site/blog. (Quite doubtful for the moment– probably just another procrastination tactic. Hee.)

Hope I can keep up with all this plate-spinning! It’s very exciting, but a little tiring as well. I will do my best. There is glitter at the end of the tunnel.

An informal salon where we explore various ways to peel with appeal… From silly to sensual, we’ll incorporate classic burlesque techniques and learn different ways to take it off for stage or bedroom performance. Led by Mynx d’Meanor.

Open to women of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds, 18 years and up. No dance experience necessary!

What to expect:

• We’ll start with some basic Burlesque Boot Camp calisthenics—stretches and warm-up exercises, basic walking and posing drills.
• Then we’ll dive into the nitty-gritty—taking it off! We’ll work on timing, musicality and characterization while incorporating some basic techniques in burlesque performance.
• After class, we can even move the sexy girly party to cool down with a cocktail at one of the local bars within blocks of the studio. Why not?

What to wear/bring:

• Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and sexy. I recommend pretty lingerie or undergarment sets, stockings and sexy (but non-hurty) heels for the daring. Otherwise, form-fitting clothes like tank tops and yoga pants will do just fine.
• Bring outer layer costumes to work with—whether it’s an overcoat, business suit, evening gown, Betty Crocker apron… you get the idea.
• There are dressing rooms available in the studio to change out of your street clothes before the salon starts.

NOTE: There will be no nudity in this class. Students should only strip according to their comfort level. Pasties will be available for sale for those who would like to give them a try.

I wonder if Mynx and her girls could take on the San Diego Derby Dolls? Probably.

Hee. I’m thinking good times around the roller rink in the future. That would be a fun collaboration.

And Jake and I got kudos from an artist in a San Diego Reader coverage of Dr. Sketchy’s by Barbarella:

Conner believes Dr. Sketchy’s attracts more illustrators, comic book, and graffiti artists than it does fine artists. “It’s a fun atmosphere versus a more serious one,” she says. At one session, burlesque performers Mynx D’Meanor and Indiana Jake created a series of poses in which they reenacted a Jack the Ripper scene. “From the beginning to the end of the kill,” Conner remembers. “Her being the hooker on the street and him meeting her, him giving her grapes, then taking her clothes off, to cutting her throat and having her on the ground. They even used red yarn as fake blood.”

Cat call

Seeing San Diego’s burlesque troupes perform together is a rare occurrence. It’s not that they absolutely hate each other; it’s just that they’re competitors—burlesque is a business, after all. At 9 p.m. Saturday, May 31, however, the laws of competition will be put aside when the Fishnet Follies come to San Diego Sports Club, 1271 University Ave. in Hillcrest. The traveling burlesque and variety show has convinced the talented and lovely ladies of San Diego’s own Hell on Hells, a bit o’ Burlesque and Sultry Savage to share a stage. And if that weren’t enough, Fishnet Follies is bringing along San Francisco’s Bombshell Betty and Mynx d’Meanor, as well as Los Angeles’ Flame Cynder. Don’t go looking for silly cat fights, though—this night is going to be all about lady love. $10. www.mynxdmeanor.com/presents.

Randy Johnson pointed this out to us this morning. Apparently, I’d been so intent on finalizing details for the show that I didn’t realize we’d gotten a “Pick of the Week” mention. But yay!

A couple points of clarification:
* We’re not a traveling show (well, unless you consider perhaps using a couple of different venues from time to time.) We plan to make Fishnet Follies a San Diego staple and are excited to be working with as many local performers as possible to give the city such exciting, varied entertainment! Gotta say, too– SDSC was a fantastic host for our first show. We definitely plan on having smaller-scaled shows at the venue in the future. For bigger blow-outs, we might have to look at bigger venues– the place was PACKED Saturday night!
* I’m a little wary of the implied emphasis on competition amongst the SD troupes. As a producer of and performer in the show, I felt really good about the night. It seemed like everybody was really excited to finally work together put on a hell of a show!

You may notice a little Chloraseptic bottle in the background of some of the photos. I was quite ill all week (after VLV debauchery) and we were still contending with a little cough during the first part of the gig. Nothing whiskey can’t cure, however. A few shots kept consumption at bay…
